Whitwood Mere

Whitwood Mere is an oxbow lake that once formed part of the course of the River Calder. Today it is an important recreational and ecological resource.

Fairburn Ings
Fairburn Ings is a large wetland run by the RSPB which is a haven for birds. In winter, the large numbers of wildfowl include smews, goldeneyes and goosanders. In summer, breeding breeding wading birds include redshanks, snipe and lapwings.

There are a number of Lakes and Ponds in the area that offer angling opportunities, and provide a habitat to fish species such as carp, perch and tench.

Pontefract Park Lake
Pump House Pond
