FISHING

Seventeen angling platforms have been installed by the Environment Agency on the north bank of the River Aire in Castleford, two of which are suitable for use by disabled anglers.

There are many places to fish in Yorkshire either on river, canal, lake or pond. The Environment Agency website (as detailed below) gives all the up to date information you need to start fishing, or find a new place to visit with your tackle.

Fishing is a popular activity which gives people an appreciation of the natural environment.

***** Important Note:
Anglers (aged 12 years or over) fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland, must have an Environment Agency rod licence.

Under national fisheries byelaws the coarse fish close season is
- 15 March to 15 June inclusive.

The coarse fish close season applies to all rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales, but does not apply to most stillwaters and canals.

There are, however, some exceptions that retain the close season - the Broads and some Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs); these sites are listed in the Schedules attached to the byelaws, which you can obtain from
your local office on 08708 506 506.
